Determination of Organic Compounds in Landfill Leachates Treated by Coagulation-Flocculation and Fenton-Adsorption
نویسندگان
چکیده
The objective of this study was to identify the organic compounds removed from the leachates when treated with coagulation-flocculation and Fenton-Adsorption by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS) in order to identify toxic compounds that could be harmful for the environment or human health. Physico-chemical characterization of the raw leachates (RL) was carried out before and after the aforementioned combined treatment process. The effluent from each stage of this process was characterized: pH, Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD5), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), turbidity and Total Suspended Solids (TSS). The organic compounds were determined by GC-MS. The removal of COD and BOD5 reached over 91% in compliance with the Tunisian Standards (NT 106.002-1989), which establishes the maximum permissible limits for contaminants present in wastewater discharges to urbanized streams. The chromatographic analysis from the Adsorption effluent proved that this treatment removed more than 99% of the organic compounds present in the initial sample. The phytotoxicity test showed that combined treatment process allowed a significant toxicity removed (92.2%). The mono (2ethylhexyl) ester 1,2-benzenedicarboxylic acid persisted, although it is not considered as toxic compound by the NT 106.002-1989) Therefore, the treated effluent can be safely disposed of into the urbanized streams.

Removal of COD and Colour from Sanitary Landfill Leachate by using Coagulation
This study investigated two methods for the removal of COD and colour from sanitary landfill leachates. The first method involved the use of coagulation/flocculation process using FeCl3 as a conventional coagulant and Ca(OH)2 as base-precipitant. The second method involved integration of Fenton’s reagent into the coagulation/flocculation process. Concentration of FeCl3 that reduced chemical oxy...

Background: Advanced oxidation processes such as Fenton and photo-Fenton that have been applied effectively to oxide the persistent organic compounds in leachate and converts them to unharmful materials and final products. However, there are a few data about application of Fenton-like process in leachate treatment. Therefore, the aim of this study was to treat the municipal landfill leachate b...

Backgrounds and Objectives:In Iran , indicated that the municipal landfill leachate has been one of the major problem for environment. In the operations, leachate treatment is a very difficult and expensive process. Although, young leachate can be treated easily by biological treatment, COD removal efficiency are usually low due to high ammonium ion content and the presence of toxic compounds s...
متن کاملComposting Plant Leachate Treatment by Coagulation-Flocculation Process
This experimental study was conducted to investigate the effect of treatment of composting plant leachate by a coagulation-flocculation process. The effects of different dosages of coagulant and different pH values on the coagulation processes were compared. Ferric chloride and aluminium sulphate (alum) were tested as conventional coagulants. The experimental results show that a 18% removal of ...
متن کاملPhysico-chemical Processes for Landfill Leachate Treatment: Experiments and Mathematical Models
In this study, the adsorption of synthetic landfill leachate onto four kinds of activated carbon has been investigated. From the equilibrium and kinetics experiments, it was observed that coal based PAC presented the highest organic pollutants removal efficiency (54%), followed by coal based GAC (50%), wood based GAC (33%) and wood based PAC (14%). The adsorption equilibrium of PAC and GAC was ...
